TEMPE – Lindsay Prescott finished 22nd overall and her team defeated a nationally ranked foe as the Arizona State University women’s cross country team finished 10th overall at the 25th Roy Griak Invitational at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday morning. Running in the Jack Johnson Women’s Division I Gold 6,000m race, the Sun Devils scored 267 points on the day to finish 10th in the 29-team field and was just seven points from ninth place.
Overall, the team title was won by #24 Arizona (76), who was followed in the Top 5 by #18 New Mexico (102), #15 Iowa State (113), #7 Duke (119) and #14 Providence (139). The Sun Devils, who are receiving votes in the latest USTFCCCA National Top 30 rankings, finished seven points behind #27 Penn State (260) and ahead of unranked Colorado State (268), #29 Rice (272) and Toledo (285), who also was receiving votes.
Individually, Prescott was the top finisher for the Sun Devils for the second week in a row after placing second last weekend in Tucson. The junior from Phoenix covered the Minnesota course in 21:38.7 to finish 22nd overall before three women came in bunched together. Alyssa Allison was 53rd in 22:10.5 with Kate Lydy (22:12.8) and Cherise McNair (22:13.3) placing 57th and 58th, respectively. The Top 5 scorers for the team was rounded out by Kauren Tarver, who was 80th in 22:36.7.
Four other women also ran in the race. The team’s Top 7 was rounded out by Anna Sperry, who was 84th in 22:39.4, and Eliza Gawryluk, who placed 113th in 22:56.9. The final two Sun Devils to finish the race were Brianna Smith, who was 143rd in 23:18.7, and Karlee Owens, who was 148th in 23:22.9.
The Sun Devils will take part in a pair of events next Friday as the top runners on the men’s team will travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational while the remaining men and the women’s team will remain in town to compete in the ASU Invitational later that night. The ASU Invitational, which is part of the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival, will be held at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa.
