Philip Francis made his first two rounds as a Sun Devil count on Thursday as the No. 9-ranked Arizona State men's golf team is in contention heading into the final round of the 28th Annual Topy Cup at Tanagura Country Club.
ASU is at 17-under 559 (279-280) and is in third overall. Texas A&M (287-269=556, -20) leads the U.S. Collegiate field by three strokes, and trails the overall leader, Tohoku Fukushi University (279-272=551, -25)--who has captured four of the last five team titles--by five shots.
Francis shot an 8-under 165 (71-65) and is in fifth place, five shots behind Jordan Russell of Texas A&M, who is at 13-under 131 (68-63). Senior Scott Pinckney is tied for sixth at 7-under 137.
Thomas Buran is at 2-under 142 (69-73) and tied for 19th, Jin Song is tied for 44th at 4-over 148 (75-73) and Spencer Fletcher is at 7-over 151 (71-80).
The final round of the Topy Cup will get underway on Saturday at 7 a.m. (3 p.m. Friday in Arizona). Results will be posted upon completion of the round on www.topycup.com.
