LOS ANGELES- The ninth-ranked women's water polo fell to No. 1 Stanford 10-5 on the first day of the MPSF Championships in Los Angeles. Five different players scored for the Sun Devils (16-13, 0-7), who moved to the semifinals of the consolation bracket with the loss.
Junior attacker Sarah Harris put the Sun Devils on the board first after netting a penalty shot at the 6:16 mark. Stanford tied the match on the following possession, but sophomore attacker Mariam Salloum scored on an exclusion goal with 4:25 left to put ASU back up by one.
Stanford added one more score at the end of the first period and scored three goals in the second quarter to take a 5-2 halftime lead. Following a trio of Cardinal goals to start the third frame, junior attacker Lynlee Smith and freshman center Shannon Haas each found the back of the net in the tail end of the quarter to make the score, 8-4.
Senior attacker Bonnie Miles added a goal in the fourth frame, but the Sun Devils couldn't overcome Stanford's five-goal lead.
Sophomore goalie Dana Harvey recorded a pair of saves in the first half and freshman keeper Amanda Young made one save in the second half.
The Sun Devils will face No. 4 Hawaii in the consolation bracket May 1 at 10:00 a.m.
