The seventh-ranked women's water polo team split their pair of games in the second day of the ASU Invitational March 27, falling to No. 5 Hawai'i 9-5 before routing Concordia 19-7 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. Junior attacker Lynlee Smith led the Sun Devils (14-9, 0-4) with five goals Saturday.
Facing No. 5 Hawai'i for the third time this season, ASU mounted a small comeback in the fourth frame, but couldn't overcome the large deficit. The Rainbow Wahine held a four-point lead at halftime and stretched their advantage to five with a pair of goals in the third quarter. Sophomore attacker Kelsey White and Smith each scored once in the final stanza, but Hawai'i countered with a goal in the final two minutes to secure the conference victory.
Junior center Sarah Harris netted the first goal of the match and added a second score in the third stanza, while freshman center Shannon Haas found the back of the net in the second quarter.
In the second game of the day, ASU jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and never let up. They added five goals in the second and third quarters en route to a 12-point victory. Thirteen players scored a goal for the Sun Devils, who collected their fourteenth win of the season.
Smith recorded a hat trick in the third frame and finished the match with four goals. Freshman defender Becca Clopp netted a pair of goals and was one of four freshmen to score in the win. Haas also scored twice, while attacker Searra Silverberg found the back of the net once and center Paige Walters collected her first career score. Senior center Kari Walsh added two goals.
Freshman goalie Amanda Young made 11 saves on the day, including five against the Rainbow Wahine and six vs. the Eagles.
The Sun Devils conclude the ASU Invitational March 28 with a match against Santa Clara at 9:00 a.m. (PST) at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe.
