TEMPE – The 2010 outdoor track and field season got underway for Arizona State University on Friday afternoon as several Sun Devils competed in the first event of the 2010 Baldy Castillo Invitational by taking part in the hammer throw that was held at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe. Five with ties to the program competed, including returning discus All-America Cj Navarro, who recorded a personal-best in the event.
Navarro, who placed eighth in the discus at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships as a redshirt freshman, placed second in the hammer on the day as she recorded a mark of 50.97m (167-3), which also stands as the ninth-best in program history. Her previous best came last year with a mark of 49.62m (162-10). Ashley Lampley also competed for the team in uniform and took third with a toss of 47.67m (156-5).
Three others competed as unattached individuals, including Anna Jelmini in the women’s event and men’s competitors Nathan Estes and Roger Dolan. Jelmini threw 44.35m (145-6) to take seventh in the women’s event while Estes was ninth and Dolan 18th in the men’s event with marks of 50.54m (165-10) and 40.41m (132-7), respectively.
The remaining events of the meet begin Saturday with the women’s discus at 10 a.m. Track events start at 5:50 p.m. with the men’s 100m wheelchair race followed by the women’s and men’s high hurdles at 6 p.m.
