CORVALLIS, Ore. - After the Sun Devils broke a 2-2 tie with a two out run in the ninth, Oregon State responded with two of their own to send #1 Arizona State to a 4-3 loss at Goss Stadium. The loss drops ASU to 33-10, 16-4 in Pac-10 play.
Mitchell Lambson took the loss, dropping him to 6-3 on the year. He threw 4.1 innings in relief of starter Seth Blair, allowing two runs on two hits. He walked five guys, four in the ninth, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Arizona State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning off OSU starter Greg Peavey on a two-run single by Matt Newman that scored Drew Maggi and Jason Kipnis. ASU had a chance to break the game open in the fifth, loading the bases with no one out, but Ryan Gorton was able to retire the Devils with out a run crossing the plate.
Oregon State would use that momentum shift in their favor, tying the game in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by Jared Norris and Adalberto Santos. That chased Blair, who went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
The teams traded zeroes until the ninth, when Drew Maggi brought home Zack MacPhee on a two-out triple that put ASU up 3-2. But Lambson walked three of the first four Beavers in the bottom of the ninth, before a sac fly tied the game and a Koa Kahalahoe single to left ended it.
Drew Maggi and Carlos Ramirez each had two hits in the loss, while Matt Newman had two RBI. Jason Kipnis returned to the Sun Devil lineup after missing Friday's game with a stiff neck.
The Devils and Beavers will play the series finale on Sunday, with first pitch at Noon from Corvallis.
