TEMPE, Ariz. - Jason Kipnis and Matt Newman drove in four runs each and Raoul Torrez hit his first home run of the season as the No. 2 Arizona State University baseball team defeated Stanford 14-6 on Friday in front of a crowd of 3,376 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils improved to 26-8, 11-2 in the Pac-10, on the season with the win.

The two teams combined for 20 runs, 26 hits and six errors, with all the runs coming in the first five innings. Six different Sun Devils had multiple hits in the game, with Kipnis and Zack MacPhee each contributing three hits and Newman, Kole Calhoun, Drew Maggi and Carlos Ramirez all recording two hits apiece.

Josh Spence got the win to improve to 8-0 on the season, going seven innings and allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned) with seven strikeouts. Mitchell Lambson came on from the bullpen to finish the game with two shutout innings. Stanford starter Jeffrey Inman allowed seven earned runs over 1.1 innings to take the loss.

The Sun Devils took a quick lead with two runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Carlos Ramirez and a sacrifice fly by Newman. After Stanford answered with three runs in the top of the second, ASU responded with five runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning with Kipnis' three-run double and Newman's two-run double.

The Cardinal scored two in the third, but again the Devils responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on a two-run homer by Raoul Torrez and an RBI double by Newman.

ASU scored three more runs in the fourth, as MacPhee and Kipnis both had RBI singles and Torrez scored on an error. Stanford scored its final run of the game in the fifth, and Kole Calhoun capped off the scoring for the game with an RBI double in the bottom of that inning.

The two teams will continue their series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
