TEMPE, Ariz.--The 25th-ranked Arizona State Women's Tennis team fell just short of a win on Friday, succumbing to No. 11 UCLA in a 4-3 conference decision. The loss drops the Devils' to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-10, while boosting the Bruins to 15-5 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-10.
The day started off promising for the Devils as 13th-ranked duo Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein swiftly upset No. 2 Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack 8-1 on court one. In the second position, No. 71, sisters Laila and Nadia Abdala upset No. 30 Stephanie Wetmore and Carling Seguso 8-3. On court three Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons put up a triumphant battle to overcome Ashley Joelson and Nina Pantic 9-7.
Singles play would not be as advantageous however, as UCLA's Ashley Joelson defeated Michelle Brycki 6-4, 6-2 on court five. On the number two court, No. 53 Nadia Abdala upset No. 45 Andrea Remynse 6-1, 6-2. No. 92 Micaela Hein rolled past Nina Pantic 7-6, 6-2 on court four. In the number six spot, Sianna Simmons was unable to get the better of Carling Seguso , who defeated the freshman 6-2, 7-5. UCLA's Maya Johansson kept senior Laila Abdala on her toes, ultimately ousting Abdala 7-6, 7-6 on court three. The real nail-biter of the day came on court number one, as UCLA's 16th-ranked Yasmin Schnack sought revenge on No. 3 Kelcy McKenna, after the sophomore standout defeated Schnack in their last meeting. The contest was hard fought on both sides, lasting three hours, and in the end Schnack got what she came for, narrowly defeating Kelcy McKenna 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.
"It was a great collegiate contest," Head Coach Sheila McInerney said. "Obviously we would have liked to be on the other side of it, but overall our kids played really hard."
The Devils return to action tomorrow when they host No. 8 USC in an exciting conference match up. The game begins at 12:00 p.m. at ASU's Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.
