TEMPE – Stephanie Garnett provisionally qualified in the long jump to lead the Arizona State University track and field team at the NAU Tune-up on Friday night inside the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., the final meet before the Sun Devils head into the championship portion of the 2009 indoor season. Garnett, who won the long jump in 6.23m (20-05.25), was the lone provisional qualifier for ASU as seven others also competed in several field events.
Cara Carpenter, for the second week in a row, cleared 3.82m (12-06.25) in the pole vault to equal the fifth-best clearance in program history, the lone mark recorded on the day to find a place on the ASU all-time Top 5. Lisa Navarro also competed in the event, finishing sixth with a best of 3.52m (11-06.50).
In the men’s events, five Sun Devils competed in the pole vault with Joe Fazio and Corey Phallen finishing third and fifth, respectively, with a clearance of 4.81m (15-09.25). Alexander Wentz (4.51m/14-09.50) and Kyle Fugit (4.36m/14-03.50) placed sixth and tied for 10th, respectively, while Duggan Grant did not clear a height. Grant did, however, place fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.78m (5-10.00).
The Sun Devils will return to action next weekend in Seattle as they compete in the MPSF Championships hosted by Washington inside Dempsey Indoor on Friday and Saturday.
