Wilmington, N.C. -
The top-ranked Arizona State women's golf team concluded day one of the NCAA Fall Preview/Landfall Tradition tied for second place. The Sun Devils carded a 5-over 293 to finish five shots behind leader USC and tied with UCLA. The tournament is being held at the par 72, 6,325-yard Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall.
Carlota Ciganda finished the first round at the top of the leader board with a 4-under 68. Ciganda, who hit 17 fairways, knocked in six birdies to end the round tied with Alabama's Camilla Lennarth.
"I liked the fast greens on the course," said Ciganda. "I hit most of the fairways and played with my two friends from Spain (Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora and UNCW's Carmen Perez-Narbon). It felt like I was playing in Spain."
Jennifer Johnson put together a solid round, shooting a 1-over 73. Looking for her third-straight top 20 finish, she will enter the second day tied for 15th. Junior Jaclyn Sweeney finished right behind Johnson with a 2-over 74, to end the first round tied for 25th. Juliana Murcia and Giulia Molinaro each carded a 6-over 78.
"July is not feeling well. She had a fever before the round, but it was low enough to where she could play and she wanted to. Hopefully she will be able to play tomorrow, but we are not sure at this point," said head coach Melissa Luellen on her senior. "I think Giulia will play very well tomorrow. She had a good practice session after the round today."
The tournament continues through Sunday. The Sun Devils will be paired with USC and UCLA tomorrow. Results can be found on www.golfstat.com.
