TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 5 Arizona State University water polo team fell 13-6 to No. 1 Stanford on Saturday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The Sun Devils fall to 9-7, 0-2 MPSF, on the season with the loss.
Senior Addison McGrath led the Sun Devil offense with three goals, marking her 12th multiple-goal game this season and 60th of her career. Juniors Bonnie Miles and Kelly Phelps and sophomore Lynlee Smith all scored one goal each in the game.
Freshman goalie Dana Harvey had 10 saves, including a block of a 5-meter penalty shot, in the cage.
The top-ranked Cardinal scored on their first possession of the game and never trailed. They stretched the lead to 5-2 after the first quarter and then took an 8-4 lead into the half, before putting the game away in the third by outscoring the ASU 4-0 in the period to move ahead 12-4. McGrath scored two goals in the fourth, but it was not enough as Stanford secured the 13-6 victory.
The Sun Devils return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to face No. 4 Hawai'i in an MPSF match-up. The game is set for 6 p.m. Hawai'i time.
