PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 7 Arizona State University water polo team came up on the wrong end of a shootout on Sunday, falling to No. 2 Stanford 15-14 in the final game of pool play at the Stanford Invitational. The Sun Devils are now 7-2 on the season, and they finished third in Bracket B of the tournament.
Nine different Sun Devils scored goals in the game, with sophomore Lynlee Smith scoring three to lead the way. Senior Addison McGrath, junior Kelly Phelps and sophomore Sam Schubert all had two goals each.
Juniors Bella Morrison and Mariam Salloum also had a goal apiece.
Stanford took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter, but ASU rallied to tie the score at 5-5 at the half. The scoring pace picked up after the break, as the two teams combined for 19 goals in the second half. The Cardinal outscored the Sun Devils 5-4 in the third quarter to take a 10-9 lead, and the teams scored five goals each in the fourth as Arizona State fell just short of its first win over Stanford in program history.
The Sun Devils will wrap up action at the Stanford Invitational later this afternoon, as they will meet No. 10 San Jose State at 2 p.m. PT for fifth place overall in the tournament.
