RIVERSIDE, Calif. - With a second one-goal win over CS Northridge in as many weeks, the No. 7 Arizona State University water polo team moved to 5-0 to set a new school record for the best start to a season. The Sun Devils defeated the No. 13 Matadors 7-6 on Saturday at the Cal Baptist Mini-Tournament, after also beating them 10-9 in last week's Michigan Invitational.
Senior Addison McGrath scored two goals for her fifth consecutive multiple-goal game to begin the 2009 season. Sophomore Lynlee Smith and freshman Mariam Salloum also had two goals each, while junior Jennifer Campo scored once.
Junior Kelly Phelps had five steals and two assists in the win, and freshman goalie Dana Harvey recorded eight saves.
Unlike in last week's meeting when the Sun Devils trailed at the half before coming back to win, ASU jumped on top of the Matadors early in this game. The Devils led 3-0 after the first quarter and then took a 5-1 lead at the half. CS Northridge rallied after halftime, but it was not enough, as ASU held on for the 7-6 win.
The Sun Devils now head to Irvine, Calif., tomorrow for the UC Irvine Mini-Tournament, where they will face No. 12 Hartwick at 9 a.m. PT.
