RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The No. 7 Arizona State University water polo team matched the best start to a season in school history with a 10-7 win over No. 15 CS Bakersfield on Saturday at the Cal Baptist Mini-Tournament. The Sun Devils improve to 4-0 on the year with the victory, equaling the 2006 team for the most consecutive wins to start a season.
Junior Kelly Phelps scored three goals in the win, while senior Addison McGrath, junior Bonnie Miles and sophomore Lynlee Smith all scored two goals each. It was the fourth straight multiple-goal game for McGrath to start the season, and Smith has now scored goals in each of her first four collegiate games. Freshman Mariam Salloum also had a goal.
Freshman goalie Dana Harvey started and made three saves in the first half, while sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Morris collected five saves, including a penalty block, in the second half.
The two teams were tied after the first quarter and at halftime, but the Sun Devils pulled away in the third. Phelps scored two of her goals in that frame, and McGrath, Miles and Smith all scored once each to give ASU an 8-5 lead after three. Phelps and Smith both scored goals in the fourth quarter to stretch the margin to five, and the Devils went on to the 10-7 victory.
The Sun Devils will continue play at the Cal Baptist Mini-Tournament later on Saturday, as they face No. 13 CS Northridge at 3:30 p.m. PT. That game is a rematch of last week's meeting at the Michigan Invitational, in which ASU prevailed 10-9.
