Sun Devil sophomore Beaté Jones placed second in the all-around with a score of 39.0 and posted two career-best scores on floor and vault in the Arizona State Women's Gymnastics competition against No. 3 UCLA. The No. 16 Sun Devils fell to the Bruins with a final score of ASU 193.075, UCLA 196.225. Senior Tiana Jean took third place with an all-around score of 38.525.
In the first rotation, the Sun Devils hit five out of six vaults to compile a team score of 48.775. Jones performed a near perfect vault tying her career-best score of a 9.9 tying for first place. Senior Nicole Harris took third place scoring a 9.85. Sophomore Mary Atkinson hit a solid 9.75. Jean scored a 9.675 and freshman Kelly Rielly a 9.6. UCLA had a team score of 49.125.
The Gym Devils struggled on bars in the second rotation. ASU had a team score of 47.25. Harris led the Sun Devils with a 9.875 tying for first place. Freshman Kahoku Palafox was the next highest scoring Sun Devil with a 9.525. Jones hit a 9.475. Jean had a score of 9.25. Sophomore Kaitlynn Bormann marked a 9.125. Freshman Stephanie Hangartner struggled on the event finishing with a mark of 9.05. The Bruins totaled a 49.175.
The Sun Devils moved to beam in the third rotation, finishing with a team score of 48.45 Harris shined on beam, tying for first place with a clean, solid routine to lead the team with a score a 9.9. Jean was the next highest scoring Sun Devil posting a 9.8 tying for second place. The Sun Devils had two scores of 9.775, Jones and freshman Amber Hammerschmidt, which marked her career-best. Bormann fell on her series finishing with a score of 9.2. UCLA compiled a team score of 49.075.
Finishing on floor, Jones performed her routine nailing all three passes to post a career best score of 9.85 taking first place in the competition. Jean performed a clean, solid routine finishing with a score of 9.8 tying for second place. Atkinson scored a career-best of 9.7. Schuett added a 9.65. Hangartner stepped out of bounds on her final pass finishing with a score of 9.6. The Gym Devils had a team total of 48.6 while the Bruins posted a 48.85.
The Sun Devils travel to Oregon State next week to compete against the Beavers looking for their first season win.
