FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Sophomore Karin Volpe tied her single-game career-high with two goals as the Arizona State women's soccer team came back from an early one-goal deficit to defeat Northern Arizona 4-2 on Friday in the season opener for both teams.

Volpe, who last season led ASU in goals (5), points (12) and shots (35), scored both of ASU's first half goals to help the Sun Devils take a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.

Sophomores Alexandra Elston and Jill Shoquist added goals in the second half to help ASU hold on for the win.

"The good thing is we found a way to win," said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd following the game. "Not only is it a win, but we scored some good goals. We struggled last year finding a way to score goals, but tonight we started off the season with four and they were all very nice goals.

"There are a whole lot of areas we want to improve upon and as is our goal every day, we want to get better from one game to the next. I told them I think we have a good opportunity to do exactly that."

Junior goalkeeper Katie Cochran, who made the first start of her career, made six saves, including one on a penalty kick in the game's 73rd minute that would have tied the game at 3-3.
