The Arizona State men's golf team finds itself in familiar territory after the first round of the NCAA Golf Championships as it trails co-leaders UCLA and USC by 14 strokes. It will hope for a repeat performance, as it trailed USC by 16 strokes after the first round of the 2008 Pac-10 Championship before charging back to take the title in April.
The championship began on Wednesday at the Kampen Course of the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. The event hosted by Purdue University, proved on the opening day to be as challenging as anticipated. After round one, top-seed Southern California and No. 9 seed UCLA share a one-stroke lead over No. 4 seed Oklahoma State. USC and UCLA recorded team totals of 297, while the Cowboys fired a 298.
The young Sun Devils, one of just three teams playing three freshmen and the only team in the field without an upperclassmen, shot a 23-over 311 in the morning tee time with its young squad, as four members of the team were playing in their first NCAA Championship. Wednesday's temperature reached 68 degrees in the afternoon under a cloudless sky with very little wind on the 7,450-yard, par 72 course.
Freshman Stephan Gross is tied for 40th at 4-over 76.
Sophomore Braxton Marquez and freshmen James Byrne are tied for 70th at 6-over 78.
Sophomore Knut Borsheim is tied for 87th with a 7-over 79.
Freshman Jesper Kennegard is tied for 100th with an 8-over 80.
Only three of the 156 golfers recorded below-par rounds. Kevin Chappell of UCLA holds the individual lead after firing a three-under par 69 in the first round.
Thirty teams and six individuals are competing for the NCAA team and individual titles at the Pete Dye redesigned Kampen Course.
The second round of the NCAA Championships is scheduled to begin with tee times starting at 7 a.m. ET on Thursday. Live scoring of the entire tournament and live video of the third and fourth rounds can be found on Golfstat.com.
