The Arizona State men's golf team is tied for first place after the first round of the Hawaii Hilo Intercollegiate as it shot a 9-under 271, led by three newcomers in the top 13. ASU is tied with Texas Tech, while Pac-10 schools Oregon State (273), USC (274) and defending NCAA champion Stanford (275) follow.
Spring roster addition Stephan Gross leads the tournament with a 6-under 64, while classmate Jesper Kennegard and sophomore Braxton Marquez are tied for 13th with a 2-under 68. Sophomore Knut Borsheim and senior Phil Telliard are both tied for 36th at 1-over-71.
"It was great to see Stephan Gross in his first ASU tournament take the lead," said ASU head coach Randy Lein. "Braxton (Marquez) shot 4-under on the back nine with a bogey on the final hole so his day improved much until the final hole. To have the lead with such a strong field here after the first day with two spring newcomers is a great start."
Georgia Tech, ranked fourth by Golfweek, is tied for fifth with 10th-ranked Stanford.
