TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State volleyball team swept Dayton 25-18, 25-19 and 28-26 on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena to win the ASU Sheraton Classic. The Sun Devils went 2-1 in their season-opening tournament, and they won the tiebreaker by virtue of their victory Friday over South Carolina, who also went 2-1 in the tournament.
Sophomore Sarah Reaves had her third straight double-double in the win, as she finished with 17 kills and 10 digs. Margie Giordano added 13 kills while Marina Mercer had 35 assists and 10 digs, and the Sun Devils hit .274 while holding Dayton to just a .107 hitting percentage in the match.
ASU never trailed in the opening set, as Reaves had six kills and hit .417 to lead the offense, and the Sun Devil defense held the Flyers to a .026 hitting percentage to take the first set 25-18. In the second set, the ASU offensive attack was nearly flawless, as the Devils hit .378 and committed just two attack errors to win 25-19.
Dayton did not go away quietly, however, as the third set featured 14 ties and eight lead changes. The Flyers led late, 22-18, but the Sun Devils fought back to force the set to extra points, and a kill by Reaves sealed the 28-26 victory.
The Sun Devils return to action Thursday, when they play at Portland at 7:30 p.m.
