TEMPE, Ariz. - Kelly Phelps scored a career-high five goals, but it was not enough as the No. 4 Arizona State University water polo teams dropped an 11-8 decision to No. 7 California Saturday at the MPSF Championships in San Diego. The loss pushed the Sun Devils' record to 21-12 overall while the Golden Bears improved to 18-10.
The two teams scored three goals each in the first quarter for a 3-3 tie before Cal outscored ASU, 5-1, in the second to take an 8-4 lead at the half. The Sun Devils took the third stanza, 2-1, before each team scored twice more in the fourth quarter for the 11-8 final.
Along with Phelps' goal scoring, Caylinn Wallace made 10 saves defensively to try to keep the game close. Katy Lawlor, Addison McGrath and Bonnie Miles each added solo goals.
ASU will close out play at the Championships by facing No. 9 San Jose State in the seventh-place game at 11:40 a.m. Sunday.
