TEMPE, Ariz. - Katy Lawlor scored four goals, including a pair to open the game, and goalie Caylinn Wallace stopped 17 shots as the No. 7 Arizona State University water polo team ran its current winning streak to eight in a row with its 12-5 defeat of visiting No. 15 CS Northridge Saturday afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. The Sun Devils improved to 19-9 overall and 6-4 in the MPSF while the Matadors slipped to 10-12 overall with a 1-9 record in the league.
ASU came out hot to open the first quarter of play as Lawlor scored a pair to stake the hosts to a 2-0 lead before Addison McGrath scored to make it 3-0. After CSUN tallied its first goal, Kelly Phelps scored with 14 seconds remaining to push the host's advantage to 4-1. The Matadors cut the lead to two again before Lawlor completed the hat trick with a goal at 4:32 in the second. CSUN scored once more before Lauren Hayes found the back of the cage with 3:17 remaining. Phelps closed the quarter with her second goal to push the Sun Devils to a 7-3 halftime lead.
The Matadors scored in the third quarter on a penalty shot before the Sun Devils responded with a goal from Amanda Stepp to send the game to the final stanza with the hosts on top, 9-4. In the final quarter, CSUN cut the lead to 9-5 before the Sun Devils scored three unanswered to close the game with a 12-5 win. In the fourth quarter, Bonnie Miles, who moved into ninth on the career assists list (35) with two helpers on the day, scored once before McGrath netted two more scores.
The Sun Devils hit the road for a 1 p.m. game Sunday in Los Angeles as they face No. 1 UCLA.
