TEMPE, Ariz. - Members of the Arizona State University track and field team won five events and earned six NCAA Region qualifiers as the Sun Devils concluded their first outdoor meet of the year Saturday night at the Baldy Castillo Invitational on Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe.
The men claimed victories in three events as Tomas Navarro continued his solid outdoor opener with a victory in the shot put at 17.13m (56-02.50) and took second in the discus, but was the top collegiate entrant, at 54.11m (177-06). Both marks are regional qualifiers, adding to the qualifier he earned one day earlier in the hammer. Also in the field, Brad Roth earned a regional berth with his winning toss of 69.52 (228-01) in the javelin.
The men's 4x400m relay won in a regional qualifying time of 3:09.16 and was comprised of Justin Kremer, Darryl Elston, Nectaly Barbosa and Jimmie Gordon. The women had one win on the track as Kari Hardt took the 800m run in 2:09.86, just 0.06 seconds from qualifying regionally, while April Kubishta captured the pole vault with a clearance of 4.15m (13-07.25).
The field events produced three more regional qualifiers for the women, including one more in the pole vault and two in the javelin. Along with Kubishta, Alana Waterford will compete in the regional meet as she cleared 3.85m (12-07.50). The javelin saw Addison McGrath throw 44.34m (145-6) and Lissa Regets 43.21m (141-9) to punch their tickets. The toss for McGrath, just her second career throw in competition, also ranks fourth all-time in ASU history. The pole vault produced one more good mark as Alycia Wade cleared a personal-best 3.40m (11-01.75) to move into a tie for eighth on the all-time ASU lists.
The Sun Devils will return to their home track again next weekend as they are set to play host to the ASU Invitational.
