TEMPE, Ariz. - Mindy Cowles hit a walk-off two run home run and Kaitlin Cochran hit .571 on the day as the No. 1 Sun Devil Softball team grabbed two more wins in Day Two of the Diamond Devil Invitational as they topped No. 17 San Diego State 3-1 in eight innings and Pacific 10-3. ASU is now 26-1 overall and riding a 23 game win streak into the final day of the tournament.
Game one slated ASU ace Katie Burkhart versus San Diego State's No. 1, Christina Ross where it turned out to be a pitchers duel, both allowing only one earned run through seven as Ross allowed the first run in the third with an RBI single up the middle off from Kristen Miller to plate Kaitlin Cochran. The Aztecs tied it up in the fourth with a solo home run from Tonye McCorkle to right.
The pitchers kept it knotted at ones through seven as they headed to extra innings where Katie Burkhart shut down the Aztecs in the eighth as the Sun Devils stepped in to finish it in the bottom of the inning as Mindy Cowles hit a two-run home run over the scoreboard for a walk-off 3-1 win.
Game two put the ball in Megan Elliott's hand where she allowed one run off after an error allowed a Tiger on who was plated off an RBI ground out. The Sun Devils rallied behind her though, scoring two off two hits from Kaitlin Cochran and Krista Donnenwirth and never relinquished the lead.
The Tigers struggled through the remainder of the game as they walked 13 on the night, five with the bases loaded to bring in a run as ASU ran off with a 10-3 win in the nightcap of Day Two of the Diamond Devil Invitational. Megan Elliott grabbed her ninth win of the season to push her record to a flawless 9-0.
The Sun Devils will wrap the Diamond Devil Invitational tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game against the University of San Diego Toreros. Tournament games start at 9 a.m. in Tempe at Farrington Stadium.
