TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team dropped a 7-5 decision to No. 6 San Diego State Sunday afternoon at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif., placing the Sun Devils 10th overall in the 16-team tournament that was held on the UCI campus and at Corona del Mar High School. The Sun Devils fall to 10-7 on the year with the victory.
The Aztecs took an early 2-0 lead through the first quarter and clung to a 3-2 lead at intermission before the Sun Devils grabbed a lead of their own after the third quarter, 5-4. The Sun Devils, however, were not able to score in the final stanza while the Aztecs scored three times for the 7-5 victory.
Katy Lawlor led the team in scoring for the second time on the day, this time netting two goals, while Traci Aparicio, Lauren Hayes and Addison McGrath each added one. Caylinn Wallace made seven saves in the cage for ASU.
ASU will return to the road next weekend with a trip to the Bay Area when it meets No. 7 San Jose State in San Jose, Calif., on Saturday and No. 2 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday with both games starting at noon.
