TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to score a 12-4 defeat of No. 17 CS Northridge Saturday afternoon as action continued at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif. The win snapped the Sun Devils' three-game losing streak and improved their record to 9-6 on the year.
The Sun Devils raced out to an early 4-1 lead and did not look back as it extended its lead to eight goals with a six-goal explosion in the third quarter before closing out the game with one more score for the eight-goal victory. Kelly Phelps and Addison McGrath each scored four goals while freshman Nikki Unbehaun scored her first hat trick, netting a trio of goals. Fellow rookie Candice Phillippe also scored once. On defense, Caylinn Wallace stopped nine shots while rookie Kaitlyn Morris made three saves.
ASU will begin play toward placing between ninth and 12th in the tournament as it will play at 8 a.m. against either No. 12 Long Beach State or No. 13 UC Santa Barbara. From there, if ASU wins, it will play for ninth place at 1:30 p.m. or, if it losses, at 2:45 p.m. for 11th place.
