PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 10 Arizona State University water polo team opened play at the Stanford Invitational Saturday morning and saw its six-game winning streak snapped as the hosts, No. 3 ranked Stanford, downed the Sun Devils, 14-4, in the first of three pool play games. The Sun Devils slipped to 6-2 overall while the Cardinal improved to 2-0.
SU jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter of play before adding four goals in the second for an 8-1 lead at halftime. The Sun Devils scored twice in the third, but the Cardinal added four goals for the third quarter in a row before outscoring the visitors, 2-1, in the final stanza for the 14-4 score.
Kelly Phelps led the Sun Devils in scoring with two goals while both Katy Lawlor and Addison McGrath added one goal each. McGrath and Traci Aparicio also added assists in the game. Defensively, Caylinn Wallace recorded nine saves in the game.
The Sun Devils will play their second pool game of the day as they face No. 5 California at 3:30 p.m. PST.
