PALO ALTO, Calif. - For three quarters, the No. 10 Arizona State University water polo team hung tough with No. 5 California, but a slow second quarter was the difference as the Sun Devils dropped an 11-7 decision in bracket play of the Stanford Invitational Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif. The Sun Devils slipped to 6-3 on the year while the Golden Bears improved to 5-1.

Cal opened the game with a 3-2 lead through the first quarter of play before outscoring the Sun Devils, 4-0, in the second stanza for a 7-2 lead at the break. ASU fought back with a 3-1 showing in the third, making it an 8-5 contest, before Cal took the final quarter, 3-2, for the 11-7 final.

Traci Aparicio led the offense with a pair of goals while Lauren Hayes, Katy Lawlor, Kelly Phelps, Nikki Unbehaun and Kristen Wagner each added on score. Defensively, Caylinn Wallace stopped four shots in goal.

ASU will face No. 2 USC at 8 a.m. Sunday morning and the meet a team to be determined following the conclusion of bracket play.
