RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Nine players scored goals, including six with two or more, as the No. 11 Arizona State University water polo ran away with a 19-2 defeat of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Saturday morning in the first of three games to be played at the Lancer Invitational in Riverside, Calif. The victory improved the Sun Devils' record to 4-1 on the year while the Athenas fell to 0-1.
The Sun Devils came out firing, scoring just 48 seconds into the game and not looking back as they took a 6-0 lead through the first quarter. ASU led 10-0 at the half before scoring four in the third and five in the fourth. The Athenas did not score until the third quarter and added their final score in the fourth.
Addison McGrath once again led the offense as she netted a career-high tying four goals, including three in the first quarter. Freshman Lauren Hayes scored her first hat trick of the year with all three scores coming in the first stanza. Senior Katy Lawlor added three goals while Traci Aparicio, Kelly Phelps and Amanda Stepp each added two. Jennifer Campo, Kristen Wagner and Kari Walsh each scored their first goals of the season.
Defensively, Caylinn Wallace was credited with two saves in the first half of play while she shutout CMS. Freshman Kaitlyn Morris, who played the final two quarters of the game, stopped a career-best seven shots while allowing both goals in the game.
The 19 goals scored is the second-most in school history behind only a 20-goal performance against Marist in a 20-2 decision on January 24, 2004, at the Michigan Invitational. Between now and then, the Sun Devils have come close to matching that performance as they had scored 18 goals on three occasions, the most recent coming last year in an 18-7 defeat of No. 20 Indiana on February 4 at the Stanford Invitational.
The Sun Devils continue their day of three games at 12:30 p.m. when they face the host Lancers of Cal Baptist before meeting Concordia at 2 p.m. in the final game of the day.
