ANN ARBOR, Mich. - On the strength of a three-goal performance from Addison McGrath, the No. 11 Arizona State University water polo team scored a 7-5 defeat of host No. 18 Michigan Saturday night inside the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich., as part of the Michigan Invitational. The Sun Devils, who rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to No. 1 UCLA, improved to 1-1 overall on the season while the Wolverines slipped to 1-1.
McGrath's 15th career game with three or more goals led all scorers while also giving her at least one goal in 49 of her 58 career games played. McGrath, an honorable mention All-American last year, was joined in the scoring column by Katy Lawlor, Kelly Phelps, Candice Phillipe and Amanda Stepp. The goal for Phillipe gave the rookie one goal in each of her first two collegiate games while Stepp and Lawlor each scored for the second game in a row.
The Sun Devils and Wolverines each netted a trio of goals in the first quarter of play before the visitors took the lead for good by out-scoring their hosts, 3-1, in the second stanza. Neither team found the back of the cage in the third before both scored once in the final quarter of play for the 7-5 final.
Defensively, senior goalie Caylinn Wallace turned in a stellar performance as she stopped 16 shots to help the Sun Devils to their first victory of the season.
ASU will play twice more on Sunday, facing Indiana at 10:20 a.m. ET before closing the tournament against No. 14 UC San Diego at 1:50 p.m. The Hoosiers are 1-1 after defeating Colorado State, 14-8, after falling to No. 7 San Jose State, 13-8. The Tritons are 0-2 on the year after falling to SJSU, 9-5, before dropping a 14-5 decision to No. 1 UCLA in their second game of the year.
