SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Amy Hastings placed fourth in the 10,000m run, Jacquelyn Johnson stands fourth after the first day of the heptathlon and six other events saw team members advance deeper into the meet as the second day of competition came to a close Thursday night for the Arizona State University track and field squad at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Hastings' finish, which came in a time of 33:08.27, gave the Sun Devils their first points of the championships as the five points earned have ASU in seventh place through just two scored events. Hastings also attained a special distinction in Sun Devil track and field history as she attained her 10th career All-America accolade, tying her with NCAA Champion and U.S. Olympian Maicel Malone for the most in the history of the program.

While Hastings' run was the only final of the day for a Sun Devil, several others competed in hopes of advancing. Jacquelyn Johnson accumulated 3,557 points in the first day of the heptathlon and sits in fourth place, just 133 points behind the event's leader, Gaelle Niare of SMU. Johnson finished third in the 100m hurdles (13.35), tied for fourth in the high jump (1.78m), 20th in the shot put (11.09m) and eighth in the 200m dash (24.52). Johnson, the defending champion, enters the final day just 15 points out of second place.

In the qualifying events, Latosha Wallace clocked a time of 56.73 to win her heat and rank second overall in the 400m hurdles, earning her a berth in the semifinals. She also anchored the 4x400m relay of Bridgette Williams, Shauntel Elcock and Jordan Durham to a time of 3:31.76, the seventh-fastest in school history, to place second in their heat and advance to the final as the sixth-place squad.

In the field, Jessica Pressley ranked second in the shot put qualifying with a toss of 16.81m (55-02.00) while Sarah Stevens, the national leader, hit a throw of 16.49m (54-01.25) to rank fifth overall. Both women will compete in the finals of the event on Saturday.

Two men competed on the day for the Sun Devils with Ryan Whiting throwing the shot put and Kelvin Love running the 200m dash. Whiting hit a mark of 18.76m (61-06.75) to rank eighth in the qualifier and advances to the finals on Saturday. Love placed 16th in the opening round of the 200m dash with a time of 21.07 to qualify for the semifinal, but his mark of 21.26 run later in the day did not advance him to the finals.

On Friday, several Sun Devils will continue their respective quests for national titles and All-America honors including Johnson in the heptathlon, Stevens in the hammer, Tai Battle in the discus, April Kubishta in the pole vault, Jenna Kingma in the 5,000m run and men's competitors Aaron Aguayo and Kyle Alcorn, both in the 3,000m steeplechase.
