INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The first two days of competition came to a close at the 2007 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., Friday with several current and former members of the Arizona State University track and field program competing for national crowns. Overall, 19 athletes with ties to the program competed during the past two days, including 11 athletes that recently competed for the Sun Devils during the 2007 college season.
On Friday, Dwight Phillips, the 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, won the men's long jump with a leap of 8.36m (27-05.25) to claim the first title of the year for the program while several others remained in contention in their respective events. Also competing in the same event were Trevell Quinley, who placed third at 8.24m (27-00.50), while Matt Turner took 11th with a jump of 7.71m (25-03.50). In other Friday finals, Amy Hastings placed ninth in the 5,000m run (16:08.71) while Tai Battle finished 13th in the discus with a toss of 50.78m (166-07).
Also competing on the day was Jacquelyn Johnson, who stands fifth overall in the heptathlon with 3,495 points. Johnson was fourth in the 100m hurdles at 13.63 (1,031 points) before tying for fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.75m (5-08.75) to collect another 916 points. Johnson then placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 11.85m (38-10.50) to score 651 points before completing the day with a time of 24.89 in 200m dash for another 897 points.
In Friday's preliminary rounds, Justin Kremer and Jasmine Chaney each placed eighth in their respective junior events to advance to the finals. Kremer clocked a time of 47.52 in the 400m dash while Chaney ran 1:01.20 in the 400m hurdles. In the senior women's 400m hurdles, Latosha Wallace placed sixth in 57.29 while three men competed in the 3,000m steeplechase. Aaron Aguayo led the trio with a time of 8:35.04 to finish sixth and was followed by Kyle Alcorn, who was 10th in 8:37.77, and Ryan Warrenburg, who was 18th in 8:45.00. Wallace, Aguayo and Alcorn each advanced to the finals of their events.
The meet opened for the Sun Devils on Thursday with two finals and three preliminaries. In the finals, Ben Englehardt placed 12th in the junior men's 5,000m run in 15:34.42 while Fasil Bizuneh, a former All-American at ASU, took 13th in the senior men's 10,000m run at 29:13.61. In the preliminaries of the senior women's 3,000m steeplechase, Lisa Galaviz (Aguilera) placed fifth overall in 9:58.47, Kelly Strong (MacDonald) took eighth in 10:05.83 and Brooke Bennett finished 18th in 10:23.74 as only Galaviz and Strong advanced to the finals. Chaney competed in the 100m hurdles in the junior division but did not finish while Phillips ran in the prelims of the men's 100m dash, placing 19th in 10.20 and failing to advance.
Action continues Saturday and Sunday in Indianapolis.
