Postgame Comments following Game One of the College World Series
UC Irvine Head Coach Dave Serrano
(opening statement): "That was a great college baseball game. We came up on the short end of the stick. I've been here before with great teams that let the College World Series get to them in game one. We played a great game but we played a little out of character. Our vision is to win and we knew was a good opponent. If we had a chance to do something different, we would. It was a great college baseball game."
(on Scott Gorgen): "He played a little out of character. He said to me he was having a hard time breathing and relaxing and with all the excitement you of the College World Series, he still kept a great offensive team to just five runs. That shows what kind of pitcher he is."
(on team's performance): "We lost as a team, just like we played as at team."
UC Irvine RHP Scott Gorgen
(on his performance): "I didn't have my best stuff today. I got in a grove. I take full blame for the first two home runs. The last home run by (Ike) , I threw him the best changeup I had all day and he sat on it. These were two great baseball teams playing today. I didn't pitch my best game, but we came out and played hard. We have to get it done on Monday."
(on his shortness of breath during game): "I wasn't fully locked in. The World Series got to me a little bit. I try to do the best I can not to get nervous. I probably had a rush of emotion. Coach always says to control what I can and with the heat and the entire atmosphere, I let it get to me."
UC Irvine RF Bryan Petersen
(on 's performance): "Their starting pitcher did a good job keeping the ball down and in the zone. He mixed up his speed early. He got the ball down in the knees and used both sides of the plate. He did a good job today."
Head Coach Pat Murphy
(opening statement): "It was a great ball game. The kid from UC-Irvine pitched tremendously well. I'm excited to see them () here and you can see why they are here. I think it was a matter of the team who batted last wins. We started well. What can you say about C.J. (Retherford)? If we played in our park, he would have had three home runs today. Our pitching staff is pretty underrated. I'm proud of our ball club."
(about Ike Davis): "He puts a lot of pressure on himself. He has more than 60 RBI and he still thinks he's struggling. Today was a matter of him sticking with it."
(about whether the team is executing): "I don't know what we're executing. We're getting better. We're starting to believe more and more. C.J. () puts a big lift into our lineup."
(about the team's experience in and whether it helped today): "If you look at it, only one kid (Romine) played here. We didn't really have anyone other than Romine who played here full-time."
RF Ike Davis
(about whether he was sitting on a change up when he hit the HR): "No. I was sitting on a fast ball. He left the change up over the middle."
(about postseason power): "I'm seeing the ball really well."
(about the fourth inning): "They were trying to get me to throw inside pitches. I was trying to keep us in the game and throw one pitch at a time."
