PALO ALTO, Calif. - The 2007 Pac-10 Championships got underway Saturday afternoon in Palo Alto, Calif., as three members of the Arizona State University track and field team competed in the Pac-10 Multi Championships. Jacquelyn Johnson, the defending champion in the women's heptathlon, is in second place following the first day of action while Angela Piana is 11th in the event. On the men's side, Joshua Kinnaman is in fifth place in the decathlon.
Johnson accumulated 3,523 points to trail leader Diana Pickler (Washington State) by 63 points through four events while Piana, competing in her first collegiate heptathlon, has scored 2,744 points and stands 11th overall. Johnson opened with 1,033 points in the 100m hurdles (13.62) to start of in second place and remained there through the following three events with marks of 1.72m (5-7.75) in the high jump, a personal-best 12.67m (41-07.00) in the shot put and a time of 24.80 in the 200m dash to round out the day.
Piana opened her day in 12th place after running 15.32 in the hurdles. She stayed in 12th after the next two events with marks of 1.60m (5-3.00) in the high jump and a personal-best of 8.88m (29-01.75) in the shot put before finishing the day in 11th place after running 26.52 in the 200m dash.
Kinnaman, a two-time runner-up in the conference event, ran 11.47 in the 100m dash to open the meet in ninth place and moved up one position after jumping to 6.64m (21-09.50) in the long jump. A personal-best decathlon mark of 14.57m (47-09.75) in the shot put vaulted Kinnaman into fifth place where he remained through the remainder of the day after clearing 1.95m (6-4.75) in the high jump and a time of 51.95 in the 400m dash.
Johnson, Piana and Kinnaman will conclude their championship competition at Stanford Sunday.
