TUCSON, Ariz. - The final weekend of preparation for several members of the Arizona State University track and field team came to a close Saturday night as nine throwers competed in the Tucson Elite Throws Classic in Tucson. In all, two women finished as runners-up in a strong field while Jason Lewis hit a personal-best mark in the discus.
Lewis recorded a toss of 56.77m to finish third overall and move into eighth on the all-time Top 10 ASU lists. Ryan Whiting finished seventh in the event with a toss of 54.98m. Also competing for the men were Brad Roth in the javelin (third at 61.96m) and Tomas Navarro in the shot put (sixth at 17.74m).
On the women's side, Sarah Stevens placed second in the discus (55.07m) with teammates Jessica Pressley (52.70m) and Tai Battle (50.83m) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. In the women's javelin, Becky Holley took second place with her mark of 43.87m while Lissa Regets rounded out the women's competitors with a third-place showing (40.55m).
Next up for the Sun Devils will be the opening rounds of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships next weekend as they head to Eugene, Ore., on May 25-26, for the 2007 NCAA West Region Championships hosted by Oregon. The Top 5 individuals and relays will advance to the NCAA Championships, set for June 6-9, in Sacramento, Calif.
