The top-ranked Arizona State women's golf team is currently in fourth place after the first round of the 2007 NCAA West Regional. ASU, the top seed in the West Regional, shot a 10-over 294 at the par-71, 6,234-yard Estrada at Snow Canyon Country Club.
"Today was a much better start than we had last year in the first round of Regionals," said head coach Melissa Luellen. "The last four holes are lined with volcanic lava rock and they are very visually intimidating. The team played those holes very well. It is a great test of nerves and the Sun Devils passed with flying colors. We look forward to improving our position tomorrow."
Last year, ASU was in 15th place after the first round of the NCAA East Regional, shooting 19-over par.
Individually, freshman Anna Nordqvist leads the Sun Devils after the first round, shooting a 1-over 72 to tie for ninth. Freshman Juliana Murcia is currently tied for 17th after shooting a 2-over 73. Sophomore All-American Jennifer Osborn shot a 3-over 74 to tie for 23rd Sophomore All-American Azahara Munoz shot a 4-over 75 in the first round to tie for 32nd. Senior Lindsay Anderson is tied for 75th after shooting a 10-over 81.
Sixth seed Stanford is currently in first place after shooting a 3-over 287 in the first round. Individually, Oklahoma State's Pernilla Lindberg holds the top spot after shooting a 3-under 68 in round one.
The top eight teams and two individuals from the NCAA West Regional, hosted by BYU, will qualify for the 2007 Division I Women's Golf Championships to be held May 22-25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
