PALO ALTO, Calif. - A pair of Arizona State University track and field distance specialists competed at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Classic in Palo Alto, Calif., Sunday evening as both Amy Hastings and Aaron Aguayo set school records in their respective events. Both times recorded bettered marks recorded last year.
Hastings clocked in at 32:30.37 in the 10,000m run, claiming an 11th-place finish overall and second among collegiate athletes behind only Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech, who ran a collegiate record time of 31:56.72 to place sixth. Hastings' time bettered the previous school record of 32:54.72 that Victoria Jackson ran last year in Sacramento to win the 2006 NCAA Championship. Hastings' mark also ranks second all-time in the history of the Pac-10, only behind Alicia Craig of Stanford, who ran 32:19.97, which was the college record before tonight and now stands as only the American collegiate record.
On the men's side, Aguayo bettered his own school record in the 5,000m run as his time of 13:37.71 earned him an eighth-place finish overall and second among college competitors. His time lowered the school record time of 13:40.16 he ran last year in Palo Alto.
A trio of Sun Devils will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., next weekend to compete in the 2007 Pac-10 Championships Multi-Events, which includes the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon.
