MESA, Ariz. - Ryan Whiting regionally qualified in the men's discus and two individuals won races as members of the Arizona State University track and field team competed at the Mesa Classic Friday night in Mesa, Ariz. In all, six men and four women competed at the event hosted by Mesa Community College.
Whiting placed eighth in the discus with a mark of 55.84m to post the only regional qualifying mark in the meet for the Sun Devils. On the track, Jimmie Gordon won the 400m dash in 47.57 while Chelsea Caloia won the 3,000m steeplechase in 11:39.58.
A pair of runners took runner-up honors as well with Samantha Knobbe finished second in the women's 1,500m run (5:06.15).
The remaining events of the Sun Angel Classic will be held Saturday with the men's and women's pole vault leading off the competition at 1 p.m. with all running events starting at 5 p.m.
