TEMPE, Ariz. - On a day filled with green hats and socks, it was Brett Wallace's home run over the green monster in center that led the way for the Sun Devils in their 23-2 rout of the Maine Black Bears in the second game of a doubleheader. ASU swept the doubleheader to improve to 18-7 on the year. 2,769 fans saw Wallace and Kiel Roling each homer twice to lead Arizona State to the victory.
Kiel Roling put ASU up 2-0 in the first with a two-run single up the middle. Ike Davis made it 4-0 with a two-run home run down the right field line, his third on the year. Roling made it 5-0 with his sixth homer of the year to left center. Wallace hit his sixth homer of the year in the fifth, a solo shot off the green monster in center. Roling brought in another run with a double down the left field line. Davis added another with an RBI single to left. Laguna added another with an RBI single that made it 9-0.
Brett Wallace brought the crowd to their feet in the sixth, smashing a ball to dead center field that cleared the green monster for a solo home run. Wallace is the 19th player in Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brick Ballpark history to clear the monster, and the first since Brooks Conrad in 2000. It was his second homer of the game and seventh of the year.
After Roling and Jarred Bogany each knocked in runs, Matt Hall continued the sixth inning onslaught with a three-run blast to left field, his second of the year. That made it 16-1.
After Wallace took the team lead in home runs with his sixth inning shot, Roling caught right back up to him, hitting a three-run bomb to left center to make it 20-1. It was Roling's seventh round tripper of the year, tying him with Wallace for tops on the squad. That gave Roling eight runs batted in on the day, one short of tying the school record. It is the most RBI in a game since Travis Buck had eight on February 29, 2004 against UConn.
Josh Satow got the start for ASU, going six innings, allowing five hits while fanning four. He picked up the win, improving to 6-1 on the year. Brett Davis went the final three to pick up his first save of the year.
Three Sun Devils had multi-hit games, led by Kiel Roling who went 5-5. He knocked in eight runs and scored six times himself. Brett Wallace went 3-5, while Ike Davis was 2-4 with three RBI. Ten Sun Devils got hits, part of a 17 hit attack.
Arizona State scored 35 runs and banged out 29 hits in the two games of the doubleheader, hitting eight home runs.
The Devils and Black Bears will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is at 1 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
