TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State got their St. Patrick's Day doubleheader with Maine off on the right foot, racing past the Black Bears 12-1. Rocky Laguna went 4-4 with three RBI, falling just a triple short of the cycle. The win puts ASU at 17-7 on the year.
Eric Sogard got things going for the Devils in the third, tripling down the right field line to bring home Rocky Laguna. CJ Retherford made it 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI groundout. Laguna made it 4-0 with his two-run shot to right field. Petey Paramore made it 6-0 in the sixth with his second homer of the season, a two-run shot to right.
Andrew Romine made it 8-0 with a two-run single up the middle. He came around to score on a single by Tim Smith. Rocky Laguna continued his stellar afternoon in the seventh, doubling home a run to put ASU up 10-0. The Devils would score two more in the eighth before the Black Bears pushed a run across in the ninth.
Laguna had two doubles and a homer as part of his four hit afternoon. Petey Paramore was 3-5 with three RBI. Andrew Romine also knocked in two runs.
Ike Davis got the start on the mound for Arizona State, lasting two innings, striking out three and allowing only two hits. Scott Mueller picked up the win (1-0) thanks to his three innings of two hit ball. Matt Spencer, pitching for the first time as a Sun Devil, went three innings to earn the save.
The Devils and Black Bears will play the second game of the St. Patrick's Day doubleheader immediately following the first game.
