TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University track and field team split its ranks and sent members of its teams to three different meets Friday, including the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, and the TCR Race Productions Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. In all, four marks yeilded NCAA provisional status while one mark also found its way onto the all-time Top 5 list at ASU.
In Albuquerque, Matt Turner won the men's long jump with a leap of 7.72m (25-04.00) to improve his provisional status for the national meet while also taking over the No. 5 position on the ASU lists. Stephanie Garnett made it a sweep of the long jump for the Sun Devils as she recorded an NCAA provisional mark of 6.18m (20-3.50) to win the women's event. Jason Lewis also recorded a victory for the Sun Devils, capturing the weight throw with his toss of 18.15m (59-6.75). Also competing at the meet in New Mexico was Jacquelyn Johnson, who placed eighth in the high jump at 1.60m (5-3.00) and ninth in the long jump at 5.58m (18-3.75).
In Fayetteville, Sara Stevens led the throwers with her second-place finish in the weight throw as she recorded a provisional-qualifying mark of 19.58m (64-3.00) while teammate Jessica Pressley finished sixth overall with a toss of 18.85m (61-10.25). Ryan Whiting rounded out the competitors in Arkansas with his fourth-place showing in the shot put with a provisional mark of 18.62m (61-1.25).
At the ISU meet, two Sun Devils competed in the sprints. Domenik Peterson place seventh overall in the finals of the 200m dash in 21.15 while Marquis Profit ran an 8.23 in the preliminary round of the 60m hurdles. Profit advances to the semifinals on Saturday.
The Sun Devils will continue action at all three locations Saturday while members of the distance group will also take to the track for the first time this indoor season by competing in the Husky Invitational in Seattle.
