CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Powered by Megan Elliott's three-hitter and home run, the No. 2/3 Arizona State Softball team opened up the 2007 Palm Springs Classic Friday afternoon as they rolled to their 14th win of the season, defeating the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames 6-2. ASU will play the second game of Friday's doubleheader at 8:30 p.m. tonight against the Ole Miss Rebels.
The Sun Devils struck first in the opening inning after Kaitlin Cochran singled to the left side and stole second only to be hit home by a single crushed through the left side by Bianca Cruz.
ASU remained quiet until the fifth when Megan Elliott nailed a solo shot over right field followed with a walk to Jackie Vasquez, and another single from Kaitlin Cochran and Bianca Cruz brought in two more to put the score at 4-1.
The Cochran/Cruz tandem came through again in the seventh as ASU tabbed three hits in a row for two runs as a single up the middle from Jackie Vasquez and a double down the right line from Kaitlin Cochran were hit home as Bianca Cruz dug in to hit a single and bring the score to 6-1.
Elliott actually had a no-hitter until the seventh when UIC tabbed three on her while scoring another run.
The Sun Devils are back in action again tonight as they take on the Ole Miss Rebels at 8:30 p.m. PT at Big League Dreams in Cathedral City, Calif.
