TEMPE, Ariz. --
By Matt Storey, ASU Media Relations
Junior forward Jeff Pendergraph scored a career-high 27 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the ASU men's basketball team to a 76-65 win over Idaho Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Pendergraph was 7-9 from the field and 13-14 at the free throw line to help ASU to its first five-game winning streak since 2004. ASU passed its win total from last season and its five-game win streak is its best since a nine-game streak from Nov. 27-Dec. 29 in 2004.
Freshman guard James Harden had 17 points and six rebounds, and fellow freshman guard Ty Abbott had 16 points and went 4-7 from 3-point range.
Sophomore guard Jerren Shipp continued his strong play of late as well, scoring 10 points and grabbing a career-high nine rebounds. He also had two rebounds and four free throws in the final minute to help ASU put the game away.
The Sun Devils used an early 11-0 run to take a 13-5 lead, but Idaho used its outside shooting to stay in the game. The Vandals made nine of their 13 3-point attempts in the first half and ended the half on a 13-4 run to cut their deficit to just two points at the break.
ASU maintained the lead throughout the second half, but it was a narrow advantage most of the half. Idaho was within four with less than three minutes remaining, but Abbott made a 3-pointer with 2:12 to play and the Sun Devils then made six straight free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Sun Devils shot 49 percent from the field and went 22-27 from the free throw line (.815) as they are now shooting 75 percent from the charity stripe on the year. The Vandals shot 50 percent and made 13 of their 23 3-point attempts.
ASU returns to action next Saturday, hosting St. Francis (Pa.) at 2 p.m.
ASU's youngest player, James Harden (born Aug. 26, 1989), leads the team in scoring at 16.5 points per game and is shooting 83.9 percent (47-of-56) from the line. After Saturday ASU plays again Dec. 29 against Saint Francis (Pa.) at 2 p.m. before opening up Pac-10 play on Jan. 3 against No. 23 Oregon.
