TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University water polo team traveled to the Los Angeles area over the weekend for a trio of scrimmages with Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) foes and gain valuable experience for its student-athletes, including five newcomers on Head Coach Todd Clapper's team. The Sun Devils opened the Saturday trip at UC Irvine for one game before heading to USC for a pair of scrimmages.
Against the Anteaters, seven different Sun Devils netted at least one goal with Amanda Stepp, Addison Doud and Kelly Phelps each finding the back of the cage twice. Traci Aparicio and Katy Lawlor each scored once, as did newcomers Devon Briese and Candice Phillipe. Phelps and Aparicio each added a pair of assists with Doud and Lawlor chipping in one each. In the cage, Caylinn Wallace halted eight shots while allowing only two goals with rookie Kaitlyn Morris notching two saves and two goals allowed. As a team, the Sun Devils went 4-for-6 on the advantage and scored on a pair of 5-meter penalty shots.
In the first game with the Women of Troy, Lawlor led the way with a pair of goals with Doud and Phelps each adding solo scores. Doud and Wallace each assisted on a goal while Jennifer Campo chipping on one assist. Defensively, Wallace allowed 14 goals while stopping five shots with Morris recording a pair of saves and allowing three goals. ASU was 1-for-2 on the advantage and scored on its lone 5-meter penalty attempt.
The second game with USC saw five different Sun Devils score one goal each with Stepp, Phelps, Phillipe, Kari Walsh and Lauren Hayes each finding the mark. Phillipe, along with Bonnie Chapman, added one assist in the game. Between the posts, Wallace stopped seven shots, including a 5-meter penalty attempt, while allowing eight goals while Morris saved five shots and allowed just one goal.
Overall, Phelps led the team with four goals in three games with Stepp, Doud and Lawlor each scoring three goals on the day. Wallace ended the day with 20 saves, including one penalty save, while Morris stopped nine shots in her first action.
The Sun Devils will wrap up their fall with the Alumni Game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Teams will be determined next week for the game that will be held before the football's annual Territorial Cup battle with Arizona (6 p.m.) across the street at Sun Devil Stadium.
