TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -Freshman Chase Budinger had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 17 Arizona snapped a three-game losing streak with a 71-47 victory over Arizona State on Wednesday night.
Jawann McClellan added 14 points for the Wildcats.
Arizona (14-5, 5-4 Pac-10) was without leading-scorer Marcus Williams, who was suspended for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Freshman Jordan Hill started in his place and scored a career-high 12 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor, and grabbed nine rebounds.
Christian Polk scored 11 points for Arizona State (6-14, 0-9), which has dropped 10 straight, the Sun Devils' longest skid since they lost the final 11 games in 1996-97.
The Wildcats were ranked seventh on New Year's Day but tumbled in the rankings with four losses in their last five games. Arizona's three-game conference losing streak was its longest since 1983-84, Lute Olson's first year in Tucson.
This was the first meeting between Olson and Herb Sendek, ASU's first-year coach.
Arizona scored the game's first eight points. Arizona State answered with a 9-2 run and took an 18-17 lead on Derek Glasser's 3-pointer midway through the half. The Wildcats closed the half on an 11-3 run to take a 37-26 lead into the break.
The Sun Devils trimmed the deficit to 42-34 before the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run sparked by Hill's dunk. The Wildcats shut out ASU for a stretch of 5:35 and limited the Sun Devils to two baskets in the final 10:22.
