OMAHA, Neb. - Defending national champion Oregon State continued their amazing run at Rosenblatt Stadium, as they beat Arizona State 12-6 on Monday night in front of 21,692 fans at the College World Series. The Sun Devils now must navigate through the loser's bracket if they are to stay alive, and it will start tomorrow with a rematch against the UC Irvine Anteaters. The loss drops ASU to 49-14 on the year.
Arizona State's starting pitching uncharacteristically faltered against the Beavers, as Brian Flores lasted only one inning, allowing two runs on four hits. Josh Satow took over for him in the second, but Satow did not fare much better, allowing six runs in his three innings of work. Dustin Brader and Scott Mueller finished off the game.
The Beavers put a two spot off Flores in the first, but an Ike Davis RBI single scored Petey Paramore to make it 2-1. OSU responded by plating four runs in the bottom of the second to make it 6-1. Oregon State would add another run on a solo homer in the third and a run in the fourth to make it 8-1. The Beavers would add three more in sixth to put the lead at 12-1.
The Devils finally scraped together some runs in the seventh, scoring four times. Raoul Torrez had a bases loaded single off Blake Keitzman to make it 12-2, then Eric Sogard knocked in two more with a base hit to center to make it 12-4. A sac fly by Paramore made it 12-5. They would add another run in the ninth.
The seventh inning outburst was too little too late for the Devils, as they were not able to overcome the hole they were in. Eric Sogard had two of the seven Sun Devil hits, while Oregon State pounded 18 hits.
The Devils will face off with UC Irvine in an elimination game on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. Arizona Time. The Anteaters eliminated Cal State Fullerton 5-4 in 13 innings on Monday afternoon.
