STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 8 Arizona State University water polo team scored 35 seconds into the game and never looked back as the Sun Devils scored a 13-5 defeat of Pacific in Stockton, Calif., Friday afternoon. Windy Ballejos anchored the team on defense, recording nine saves in her first career start while five different players scored two goals each to help the Sun Devils improve to 10-10 overall on the season and 3-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Tigers slipped to 5-17 overall and 0-11 in the MPSF.
Addison Doud scored the first goal of the game before Ashley Bower netted two goals in the first quarter to stake the visitors to a 3-0 lead after one. Doud again opened the scoring for the Sun Devils in the second quarter as she scored her second goal of the game before Amanda Stepp and Kelly Phelps each added a goal for a 6-0 ASU lead at the intermission.
Following the break, Katie Hedley pushed the lead to 7-0 before the Tigers got on the board with two in a row before Kari Walsh scored her first of the contest. After another two goals for the hosts, Phelps added her second of the game to push the lead back to five goals (9-4) with one stanza to play. Katy Lawlor scored to open the final quarter of play before Lindsay Williams scored. Walsh and Stepp followed with their second scores of the contest before a late goal from UP ended the scoring with the Sun Devils on top, 13-5.
The victory extended ASU's current win streak to five in a row, tying for the second longest in program history (six is the record set in 2003).
The Sun Devils will close out their two-game swing through the Golden State with a noon contest Saturday at No. 6 California.
