Cal Tops No. 7 Softball 2-1Cal Tops No. 7 Softball 2-1

April 29, 2007

BERKELEY, Calif. - The story remained the same on Sunday afternoon as the No. 7 Sun Devil softball team out-hit their opponent, the Cal Golden Bears, 6-3, but came out with a 2-1 loss to the Bears. ASU drops to 45-13 overall and 9-6 in conference action while Cal moves up to 30-27 overall and 4-11 in Pac-10 play.

For the second day in a row, the Bears got on the board first after a walk to Erika Racklin was brought home on a huge double to right center from Christina Schalling who Megan Elliott took deep to a 3-2 count before she roped one fair to plate Racklin.

ASU threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with only one out with singles from Ashley Muenz and Jackie Vasquez and a walk to Kristen Miller, but the Sun Devils were unable to plate one as Lauren Frankiewicz drew a foul out and a strike out to end the inning and the potential Sun Devil rally.

A solo shot from Cal's Taylor Kelly in the fifth pushed the Bears' lead to 2-0 before Kristen Miller answered it in the top of the 6th, putting one over the left field fence for her eighth home run of the season. The effort wasn't enough though as the Golden Bears brought in Marissa Drewrey in the fifth for her second save of the season to end the final at 2-1.

The Sun Devils will remain on the road next weekend as they continue Pac-10 play in Oregon against the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers.
