LA JOLLA, Calif. - Katy Lawlor capitalized on a late turnover to score the game winning goal with just 42 seconds remaining to give the No. 11 Arizona State University a 9-8 defeat of No. 15 UC San Diego in its final regular season game of the year Saturday evening in La Jolla, Calif. The Sun Devils concluded their regular season with a 13-12 overall record while the Tritons stand 17-12.
The Sun Devils took an early 3-2 lead after the first quarter of play before the Tritons tied the game at five heading into halftime. ASU outscored UCSD, 3-1, in the third quarter before holding on for a 9-8 victory. The Sun Devils held an 8-6 lead after three, but the Tritons tied the game at eight with 2:30 remaining. After both teams went back and forth with out a goal, the hosts turned the ball over with ASU taking the ball down the pool and scoring with 0:42 remaining for the victory.
For the second game of the day, Katie Hedley scored three goals to lead the Sun Devils in scoring, giving her six total. Ashley Bower, Addison Doud, Ali Gronow, Kelly Phelps and Amanda Stepp also scored in the game.
After their loss earlier in the day at No. 5 San Diego State, the Sun Devils will enter this week's MPSF Championships as the No. 8 seed in the tournament being held in Tempe (Thursday through Sunday). The Sun Devils will play in the final game of the first day (3:40 p.m.) when they meet No. 9 seed UC Irvine. Action starts at 10 a.m. and a full schedule can be found on thesundevils.com.
