TEMPE, Ariz. - Eight different players recorded at least one goal, but the team had to hold off a late charge as the No. 11 Arizona State University water polo team recorded a 16-14 victory over visiting No. 14 Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Saturday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. The Sun Devils evened their overall record to 11-11 on the year with a 4-6 mark in the MPSF while the 49ers slipped to 7-15 overall and 3-8 in the league.
The Sun Devils came out hot in the first quarter as the hosts turned a 3-0 lead into a 4-2 advantage after one quarter of play. ASU then scored the next five goals in a row to open the second stanza and a 9-2 lead before heading into halftime with a 10-4 lead. The third quarter, however, was a big turning point in the game as the visitors outscored the hosts, 7-5, to cut the ASU lead to 15-11 with one period to play. In the final stanza, ASU held on to win despite being outscored, 3-1.
Overall, Ashley Bower led the offense with four goals while Addison Doud added a hat trick of her own. Bonnie Chapman, Katie Hedley and Amanda Stepp each scored a pair of goals while Kim Buck, Katy Lawlor and Lindsay Williams rounded out the scorers in the game. Megan Winchell led all scorers in the game as she tallied seven goals for LBSU while Marina Canetti added three and Dayne Wawrzynski scored twice.
Defensively, Windy Ballejos picked up the win in her third start of the season and third in a row while recording nine saves. Kim Hayes recorded eight saves for the 49ers.
The Sun Devils will close out their slate of regular season home games Sunday at noon as they play host to No. 7 UC Irvine. Prior to the game, the team will honor its four seniors as they are set to play their final home game in their Sun Devil careers.
