IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 11 Arizona State University water polo team built an early lead and hung on for an 8-7 victory over No. 16 Michigan Saturday afternoon at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif. The Sun Devils improved to 2-5 overall on the year and will compete twice Sunday to determine what position the team will finish in the 16-team tournament.
The Sun Devils jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter before the Wolverines outscored ASU by the same count in the second stanza for a 4-4 tie at the intermission. Following the break, the Sun Devils once again scored three goals to UM's one before scoring once in the fourth and allowing two for a slim 8-7 victory.
Katie Hedley scored twice for the second game in a row and Amanda Stepp extended her scoring streak to seven games by adding two goals in the game. Kim Buck, Bonnie Chapman, Addison Doud and Lindsay Williams each added goals in the victory.
ASU will face No. 7 Loyola Marymount at 9:15 a.m. PT Sunday morning to determine what place it play for later in the day. A Sun Devil victory will send them to the ninth-place game against the winner of No. 8 San Diego State/No. 12 UC Santa Barbara while an ASU loss would see it face the loser of the SDSU/UCSB game at 2:45 p.m. with the winner placing 11th overall.
